• Exciting opportunity to join the Commercial Division of the County Court of Victoria commencing in July 2024
• $74,580 per annum + 11% superannuation (VPS Grade 3.1)

About the Court

The County Court of Victoria has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial Court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears over 12,000 criminal, common law, and commercial cases each year. There are a total of 80 Judges and over 300 staff, including associates.

About the Commercial Division

The Commercial Division deals with cases that involve business and financial disputes, including claims for repayment of loans, property disputes, building disputes, tax and superannuation matters, family trusts, and claims for breach of contract. 

There is no monetary limit on the Court's jurisdiction, meaning it is effectively concurrent with the Supreme Court of Victoria.

About the role

As one of two Associates you will provide high-level operational, administrative, and technical support to Judge Marks, both in chambers and in court.

The role involves:

  • Legal support – conducting legal research, preparing draft orders and case summaries, and assisting with judgment writing.
  • Case file management – keeping accurate records of hearings, judgments and orders, and preparing correspondence and other documents.
  • Administrative assistance in court – facilitating and coordinating courtroom processes, scheduling videoconferencing, liaising with court users and staff, preparing documentation, and maintaining a record of exhibits.
  • Administrative assistance in chambers – being responsible for the administrative management of the Judge's chambers, assisting with the preparation of presentations, scheduling meetings, and maintaining the Judge's chambers specific manuals and templates.

About you

To be successful in the role you will possess:

  • A strong interest in commercial law;
  • Effective verbal communication skills including public speaking or mooting experience;
  • Excellent skills and experience in legal writing, legal research, editing, and proofreading;
  • Great attention to detail and excellent organisational skills;
  • The ability to complete work independently, and with minimal direction;
  • A law degree and/or commercial law experience is highly desirable.
