Job Title: Head of Health, Safety & Environment

Job Purpose: The Head of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of health, safety, and environmental programs within the organisation. This role aims to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, promote a culture of safety and environmental sustainability, and mitigate risks to personnel, property, and the environment.

Key/Role Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive HSE policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with local and national regulations and standards.
  • Conduct regular assessments and audits to identify potential hazards, risks, and non-compliance issues, and develop strategies for mitigation and improvement.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the business, fostering a culture of safety awareness, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including management, operations, and HR, to execute and integrate HSE initiatives into business processes and decision-making.
  • Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and develop corrective and preventive actions to minimise recurrence and improve safety performance.
  • Coordinate training and awareness programs to educate employees on HSE policies, procedures, and best practices, and promote a proactive approach to risk management.
  • Monitor and analyse HSE performance metrics and KPIs, and prepare regular reports and presentations for senior management and regulatory authorities.
  • Stay abreast of emerging HSE trends, technologies, and best practices, and recommend innovative solutions to enhance organisational safety and environmental sustainability.

Qualifications / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or similar in occupational health and safety, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Professional certification in HSE/ OHS management.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in HSE management, preferably in a agriculture, manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HSE regulations, standards, and best practices, with a track record of successful implementation, Proactive execution and compliance.
  • Proven leadership skills, with experience managing and developing individuals.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Proficiency in HSE management systems and software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and actively manage risk register and actively manage within a remote workforce environment
  • Leadership: Ability to inspire and motivate others to achieve HSE objectives and foster a positive safety culture.
  • Adaptability: Capacity to thrive in a dynamic and evolving environment, and effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Collaboration: Skill in building and maintaining productive relationships with cross-functional teams and external partners to achieve common goals.
  • Integrity: Commitment to upholding ethical standards and promoting honesty, transparency, and accountability in all HSE activities.
  • Innovation: Creative thinking and problem-solving skills to develop novel approaches and solutions to complex HSE challenges.
  • Resilience: Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, and effectively navigate setbacks and challenges in the pursuit of HSE excellence.

Key Relationships:

  • Executive Team: Collaborate with senior management to align HSE objectives with organisational goals and priorities.
  • General Manager & Site Operations Managers: Partner with operational leaders to integrate HSE considerations into daily operations and decision-making processes.
  • Regulatory Authorities: Maintain positive relationships with regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with applicable HSE laws, regulations, and permits.
  • External Consultants and Vendors: Engage with external experts and service providers to access specialised knowledge and resources to support HSE initiatives.
