The Western Public Health Unit (WPHU) has been established to strengthen the public health response to communicable diseases and other health issues. The unit is part of a system of three metropolitan public health units and six regional units that provide a state-wide network of public health delivery and oversight.
WPHU is led and coordinated by Western Health and responsible for approximately 1.4M people in the LGAs of Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Hobson’s Bay, Merri-bek, Melbourne, Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham. Local public health units have responsibility for management of almost all notifiable conditions under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act (2008) alongside the Department of Health (DH), as well as non-communicable disease and health promotion activities in their assigned catchments, as part of the state’s overall public health response.
The Data Analyst is a member of the Data, Epidemiology and Surveillance (DES) team. The role reports to the Deputy Director, working closely with teams across the unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide data management, report development, analytical and data visualisation support to the Western Public Health Unit
- Strong communication skills to train and support other staff in data management and be able to translate operational and research questions into analytic projects
- Design, develop, maintain, and operate systems for automation of current WPHU processes

Data analytics is an ongoing focus area for our Office. The Data Analytics team is a small, energetic group with diverse skillsets and a strong strategic focus. - Tertiary qualification in a related field such as computer science, data management, information systems or information technology.
- Have the ability to apply for and maintain an Australian government baseline level security clearance - Australian citizenship is essential.
- A professional certification in data analytics or an equivalent professional certification would also be desirable, but not essential.
What you will need to succeed
- Demonstrate a comprehensive depth and breadth of knowledge and experience in auditing and data analytics, including technical knowledge and conceptual thinking to identify opportunities where data analytics can be used to solve complex problems or achieve audit objectives.
- Significant experience in performing technically complex data analytics (extraction and analysis of data using contemporary data analytics and visualisation tools eg. Tableau or Power BI).
- Demonstrated experience in leading, developing and implementing strategic plans, programs of work, frameworks and policies for a technical data management function and/or team.
- Demonstrated experience in advising on, developing, planning and implementing capability development/training programs and significant change management processes.
- Experience in researching and adopting new technologies and using computer programming languages used for performing data extraction and analysis (eg. SQL).
- Have a proven track record of building and managing relationships, and working under broad direction.

Your team
Data analytics is an ongoing focus area for our Office. The Data Analytics team is a small, energetic group with diverse skillsets and a strong strategic focus. The team works on various project types, including establishing and managing automated data collections, audit and corporate analytics work, building and maintaining data analytics apps and supporting analytics learning and development initiatives.
Your new role
As the Principal Data Analyst in the Data Analytics team, you will apply advanced professional and technical skills to undertake detailed analysis of data (system and financial) and the development of data analytics approaches and systems to meet the needs of Parliament and our clients.
You will be responsible for assisting with developing and managing the implementation of strategies that promote best practice data analytics systems and techniques in auditing across the Office. This includes planning and implementing a program of technically complex and specialised projects and a customised data analytics training program across the Office to meet audit and corporate objectives.

Essential requirements
- Tertiary qualification in a related field such as computer science, data management, information systems or information technology.
- Have the ability to apply for and maintain an Australian government baseline level security clearance - Australian citizenship is essential.
- A professional certification in data analytics or an equivalent professional certification would also be desirable, but not essential.
What you will need to succeed
- Demonstrate a comprehensive depth and breadth of knowledge and experience in auditing and data analytics, including technical knowledge and conceptual thinking to identify opportunities where data analytics can be used to solve complex problems or achieve audit objectives.
- Significant experience in performing technically complex data analytics (extraction and analysis of data using contemporary data analytics and visualisation tools eg. Tableau or Power BI).
- Demonstrated experience in leading, developing and implementing strategic plans, programs of work, frameworks and policies for a technical data management function and/or team.
- Demonstrated experience in advising on, developing, planning and implementing capability development/training programs and significant change management processes.
- Experience in researching and adopting new technologies and using computer programming languages used for performing data extraction and analysis (eg. SQL).
- Have a proven track record of building and managing relationships, and working under broad direction.

As a **Senior Research Data Analyst** in the Data Innovations & Analytics team, you will have the opportunity to work with internal teams having a direct impact on updating and creating new models about how technology impacts work. You will collaborate with other teams to embed them in our products and bring them to life for our clients. You will have the opportunity to work on end-to-end analytics product development: from researching, data modelling, data quality, visualisation, and insight development.
At the moment, this role is focused on:
+ Researching new technologies and trends in their adoption and disruption of work and industries.
+ Using critical problem-solving to distinguish valuable data, derive insights and solve the right problems.
+ Using research to update our models (Python is a must for data processing, cleaning and analysis, SQL is a good to have)
+ Preparing insights that wow technical and non-technical users (Show your top-notch visualization skills with Tableau)
+ Ensuring the data is trustworthy (we're big on data quality and documentation)
+ Using Generative AI to improve data quality, research, and validation.
**You're probably a match if.**
+ You have experience in data analysis (at least 2 years), research and problem-solving.
+ Proven ability in translating complex technical findings into actionable insights.
+ Can speak to technical and non-technical teams including Data Scientists, Product Managers, Designers, Sales, Clients. Professional fluency in English is essential.
+ Have strong Python skills, including writing reusable functions and scripts, debugging and troubleshooting code, and performing data cleaning, processing and analysis (e.g., with pandas and numpy).
+ Have basic SQL experience, comfortable with joins and subqueries.
+ Have a basic familiarity with data visualization principles and you're excited to learn how to use data visualization tools like Tableau, which will include connecting data and creating basic charts.
+ Have an interest in Generative AI and are willing to learn and experiment with how to leverage it to improve and scale our processes.
+ Are comfortable with ambiguity, iterating on feedback, and continuous improvement.

About The Opportunity
Join a dynamic and impactful role supporting the newly established Renal Transplant Service at Liverpool Hospital, a key initiative within the South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD). As the Data Lead for Renal Services, you will play a pivotal role in the development, extraction, analysis, and reporting of clinical data. Your work will support both local service delivery and national registry contributions, including the management of the renal and transplant unit database and reporting to ANZDATA (Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry).

What You'll Be Doing
This position will lead and oversee data development, extraction, analysis and reporting to support Renal Services in South West Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD); and more broadly the management of the renal and transplant unit database and the ANZDATA (The Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry).
The position is also responsible for facilitating ongoing development of District Renal data integrity, the development and delivery of education programs involving Renal data management and for the initiation of data management investigations and solution development. The position will ensure processes are supported with well documented standard operating procedures, policy frameworks, data dictionaries and coding standards.
The position is required to assist the Director, Renal Services and other senior staff in the preparation of reports/presentations and in the collection & reporting of clinical activity information.
The Renal Data Manager provides regular renal data to internal staff and external agencies as required and participates in formal processes for the strategic and operational planning for the District Renal Service.
