Job Description

Description
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Amazon's vision is to be the world's most customer-centric company, and this role is key to that vision. As a Security Field Engineer, you will be deep diving security products that protect our customers in our data centers to meet ever-evolving customer needs as we continue expanding our fleet to hyper-scale. We are looking for security engineers from diverse backgrounds, who are creative problem solvers, and passionate about delivering security solutions at scale. Our programs, controls, and services underpin many cloud technologies, so we carefully consider our technology decisions, dependency trees, and architectures to ensure that the company's critical services can depend on us. We are a global team and have a culture of learning from each other. We don't expect people to join our team knowing everything. We want people who are excited to learn, to challenge the status quo, and who are energized by building highly scalable and available systems on a global scale.
As an ideal candidate you:
- Possess strong engineering judgement and are able to provide recommendations despite uncertainty
- Are detail and data oriented
- Have experience managing security projects and consultants.
- Build trust and relationships with different stakeholders (e.g., Operations, Commissioning, Construction and Design)
- Be inclined to get into the field to see things up close.
Security Engineers at Amazon are expected to be strong in multiple domains. You'll join a diverse team of electrical, mechanical, controls, structural, and fire protection engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people and partner teams across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Successful candidates will be able to balance their strong technical depth with the soft skills required to quickly and effectively collaborate across the company to mitigate emerging risk. Engineers in this role must demonstrate resilience and an aptitude for navigating complex problems with composure and tact. Above all else, a strong sense of customer obsession is necessary to achieve our goal of keeping Amazon and its customers secure.
Key job responsibilities
As an Amazon Security Field Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle support to AWS Data Centers from design inception through site improvement and maintenance. You will be the 'go to' engineering resource for your region when technical advice is needed, and will use your subject matter expertise and engage with diverse teams to:
- Perform design and equipment submittal review for security products in our Data Centers.
- Troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures.
- Directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, including critical equipment and event support.
- Review designs for existing products, which improve security/efficiency.
- Interface with internal design engineering teams, server hardware teams, and environmental health and safety teams to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered.
- Work on concurrent projects, sometimes in multiple geographical regions.
- Initiate and lead security site audits within Amazon's data centers. Produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediation's.
A day in the life
You will operate with high autonomy owning engineering reviews, bar-raising initiatives, and root cause analyses for security infrastructure products. This role has a high level of discretion with regards to daily activities. While not always daily, your skills will provide a valuable part in assessing the risks and failures associated with security products protecting our data centers. Each day you will interact with different teams responsible for all aspects of the data centers. You will serve as the technical security expert for our partner platform teams, so other responsibilities will ebb and flow out of daily priority including threat modeling, standards writing, architecture consultations, and designing proactive security systems. You will have the opportunity to work on projects locally, regionally and globally.
