Position Overview
We are seeking a Research Software Engineer (RSE) with a passion for research and demonstrable experience in designing and delivering software products, whether in academic or government contexts. The ideal candidate is proactive, collaborative, and ready to take technical responsibility across the entire project lifecycle—from requirements gathering to costing, design, and delivery. Your role will include:
Designing, developing, and implementing research software solutions that are aligned to best practices in FAIR, CARE, and responsible design principles.
Leading the technical delivery of projects, ensuring high standards are maintained across every stage of the process.
Working closely with researchers from a variety of fields, helping them turn research ideas into reality through robust and scalable software solutions.

The HASS Digital Research Hub (HDRH) is a new team dedicated to the delivery of world-leading research software engineering (RSE) collaboration and support. + Identify, define and develop detailed requirements for facility infrastructure, equipment and system modification, replacement, upgrade and/or recapitalization.
+ Design and/or develop solutions for a variety of technical problems of moderate to extreme scope and complexity across the mechanical engineering discipline.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to be responsible for and mentor junior engineers and play a key role in contributing to quality engineering, client relationships, technical oversight, and the commercial success of the business unit. You will collaborate with a diverse team of talented people who are committed to supporting our clients and work on significant infrastructure projects that are shaping the future of Australia.
Role:
This role will suit someone with experience in the delivery of detailed infrastructure design, particularly in the Resources, Water and Wastewater or Defence industries, who is looking to drive technical excellence and guide and develop junior engineers while working across a range of multi-faceted engineering projects.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
+ Assist in defining the scope of works for various projects
+ Prepare concept, preliminary, and detailed designs of mechanical and hydraulic systems, including pumping stations, process plants, industrial facilities and treatment facilities in line with Australian and local authority standards
+ Prepare specifications, selecting materials and components
+ Coordinate works with construction contractors including construction site visits where required
+ Provide technical guidance to designers and less experienced engineers
+ Provide technical oversight to the design of assets across all project stages
+ Work as part of large multi-disciplinary teams to deliver highly coordinated infrastructure documentation
+ Develop standard products and design tools to drive technical excellence and design efficiencies within the broader team

Skills & Experience Required:
+ Hold an accredited Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
+ Engineering design experience with knowledge of industry standards.
+ Hydraulic modelling or pipe stress analysis experience (e.g. CFD, FATHOM, Watergems, CAESAR II) is highly desirable
+ Experience with cranes and/or heavy machinery is highly desirable
+ Proven ability to work in engineering, and design modelling teams, working directly with clients, and manage projects to scope, budget and program.
+ A Chartered Engineer (CPEng) credential from Engineers Australia or the ability to obtain chartership
+ Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a baseline Defence security clearance.
+ International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) eligible*
* As some of the works in the Defence industry support the broader AUKUS program, there is a need to comply with US Department of Defence regulations and access to critical design information is only available to ITAR eligible personnel.
