Social Worker | Women's + Children's
Location : Townsville, QLD
Pay Rate : $72.56 per hour + super + accommodation + travel allowance
Contract Type : Full Time Locum
Contract Length : 8 week contract
Roster + Hours : 37.5 hours per week - Monday to Friday | 8am - 4pm
- Provide social care in the Women's & Children's inpatient team. Deliver essential clinical support across maternity, paediatrics, NICU, PICU, SCN and paediatric oncology.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team across inpatient wards
- Great work life balance: Monday to Friday - no weekend work
About the Role:
As a Locum Social Worker in the Women's and Children's inpatient team, you'll provide essential clinical support across areas such as maternity, paediatrics, NICU, PICU, SCN, and paediatric oncology. Working within a multidisciplinary team, your focus will be on assessing psychosocial needs, discharge planning, crisis support, and liaising with families and services to ensure trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care.
Caseloads are allocated based on experience, offering exposure to both acute and sub-acute settings. While this is not a mental health role, experience in hospital discharge planning, child protection, and family violence is highly regarded.
This role suits a team-oriented clinician who thrives in a fast-paced hospital environment and is committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of women and children.
Skills & experience
- Degree in Social Work & eligibility for AASW
- Recent hospital experience required
- Knowledge of child protection and family violence desirable
- HP3-level capability or equivalent
- Ability to work autonomously in acute clinical settings

Services are comprised of 24-hour inpatient care, Monday to Friday outpatient departments, iREAP Day Rehabilitation program, several specialist community teams inclusive of Transitional Aged Care, Geriatric Flying Squad, Young Onset Dementia, and day centre program, 24-hour accommodation service for regional guests and the full range of hospital support services. This Social Worker position sits within a multidisciplinary team offering coordinated rehabilitation services and discharge planning for older people. Objectives of the role are to:
- Provide in-patients and their families and carers with high quality, person-centred support during their stay;
- Plan and coordinate appropriate services for discharge in conjunction with multidisciplinary team;
- Work towards quality improvements in social work and multidisciplinary services in line with War Memorial Hospital’s overall objectives.
This Social Work position sits within the WMH Social Work Department and works predominantly as part of the inpatient team. This role may also be required to work in the outpatient and/or community setting as requested and directed by Social Work Manager.
This position is full time permanent role.

Selection Criteria:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a Social Worker and a demonstrated knowledge and expertise in Social Work practice in an aged care and/or community setting li>Demonstrated ability to provide effective Social Work services to older people, including skills in psychosocial assessment and management, comprehensive client centered assessment and care plan development outlining clinical reasoning from chronic and complex health care needs clients
- Demonstrated ability to provide case management in consultation with the client, carer and multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant community services, professional networks and residential aged care services for clients with complex aged related psychosocial issues and/or chronic complex health care needs
- Ability to work effectively both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team and to exercise independent professional judgement on routine matters, commensurate with years of experience
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to proactively engage with patients/clients across all levels and departments within WMH and external stakeholders
- Current NSW Drivers’ license Class C li>Degree or postgraduate qualification in Social Work and eligibility for registration with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
All Category A NSW Health workers are required to have received an annual seasonal Influenza vaccination or have an approved medical contraindication certificate. COVID-19 vaccinations are strongly recommended for all NSW Health workers.
